The French Program at UTB

According to Auguste Rodin, "Nothing is a waste of time if you use the experience wisely."  This statement seems fitting, especially today when many struggle to appreciate the value of studying French.  While learning the language, literature, and cultural and intellectual history of France might not appear to insure career success, it may very well engender interest in and foster mastery of the humanities. Yet studying any field within the humanities is not just an anthropocentric venture, given that art and literature so often provoke an appreciation of nature, the very model of the sublime.  The accumulation of knowledge of the roots of our cultural tradition as well as of the natural environment is an invaluable asset that promotes critical and creative thinking. In short, studying French helps to build a mind, not a robot or a homo economicus, or better yet, it molds the mind like a piece of clay.

UTB/TSC offers a 21-credit Minor in French, which includes language and translation classes, as well as courses on French Culture and Civilization, French Literature, French Cinema, and the French Enlightenment, among others.  Professors encourage oral proficiency, while teaching fundamentals of grammar, vocabulary, culture, and pronunciation. Students can also participate in the annual summer study abroad program in Paris, in addition to the semester study abroad exchange with the Sorbonne University.  Surf our webpage for further information about the program and about ways to become proficient in French, to learn about some of the finest French Cultural treasures, and to transform your mind by studying various domains of the Humanities.
